Hot Flushes

Hot flushes and the menopause are probably the most talked about of all the symptoms. Hot flushes are not the same for everyone, with some women feeling warm, or with a sensation of heat rising through their bodies. For some, this will be accompanied by sweating, dizziness or even palpitations.

Coping with hot flushes can be tricky, especially if they are happening multiple times a day. They are hard to ignore or disguise and can lead to women losing confidence and feeling embarrassed in social situations and at work.

The most effective treatment is to replace the missing hormones with HRT. In women who can’t take HRT, there are other non-hormonal medications which can help.

Other things which might help include:

  • Limiting alcohol, hot drinks, and caffeine
  • Avoiding spicy food
  • Trying to reduce stress levels (yoga, mindfulness etc.)
  • Stopping smoking and reducing alcohol
